Instructions for PC - Windows® 95, Windows® 98, Windows® NT, Windows® 2000, or Windows® ME

Please print these instructions before beginning so you can easily refer to them while going through the Cisco 675 or 678 External Modem setup processes. for CPUnet Internet PPP and Static Internet Service.  If you do not have a printer, you may save these instructions and open them on your desktop so that you can follow along as you complete the installation processes. NOTE!!!!   You will need to know whether your CPUnet Account is set for "PPP" or "STATIC IP" use.   If you are not sure, contact CPUnet Internet support at:  253-278-2204 or 253-221-3290 .  By default, all accounts are set for "PPP" use unless otherwise requested by you at the time your account was setup.


Process - Connecting to your Cisco 675 or 678, and entering the correct information into the modem depending on the type of DSL service you have.


 

Sub-Process 1 - Connecting to your Cisco 675 or 678

STEP 1

In this step, you will be performing the physical connections for your modem to enable you to configure your modem, by connecting the modem wires.



Connect your Cisco 675 or 678 to your PC. Ensure that the yellow cable is connected to the Ethernet port on your PC and to the "ENET" port on the back of the Cisco 675 or 678.



Connect the blue or gray management cable (this cable was shipped with the original packing material) to a "COM" port on your PC to the "MGMT" port on the back of the Cisco 675 or 678.

NOTE: A "COM" port is a communications port used to connect external devices, such as your modem to the PC, most COM ports are identified by a number on the back of your PC. The following picture is an example of COM port on a PC.



NOTE 1: Identify the PC COM Port number the blue or gray management cable is installed on. You will need this information for the next step.

Connect the modem power cable and ensure the green power light is on.

STEP 2

To set up your computer to connect to your modem, the software program you will be using to connect to your modem will be HyperTerminal®.

To access HyperTerminal in Windows® 95/98/ME, perform the following.

Click START on your Windows® desktop and select PROGRAMS. Then, select ACCESSORIES and then, select HYPERTERMINAL. Click on the HyperTerminal icon to launch HyperTerminal.



Windows 2000 users select START, PROGRAMS, then select ACCESSORIES, then select COMMUNICATIONS, and then select HYPERTERMINAL.

NOTE for Windows® 98 users: Loading Windows® 98 does not automatically load HyperTerminal. If you cannot find a HyperTerminal folder, load HyperTerminal from your Windows® 98 compact disk.

STEP 3

Enter "Cisco 675 or 678" as a connection name and select an icon. Then, select OK.

STEP 4

In the CONNECT USING field, select the COM port you connected the blue cable to and noted in STEP 1. Then, select OK.

STEP 5

In the Properties window, please set the port settings as follows.

  • Bit per second: 38400
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow control: None

Then, select OK.

STEP 6

Press Enter to initiate the session in HyperTerminal. If the session does not initiate, press Enter again. A CBOS prompt will appear as follows:

STEP 7

If you set an executive password, please type it and press Enter. If you have not set an executive password, please press Enter to access the Cisco 675 or 678 and the following prompt will appear.

NOTE: The Cisco 675 or 678 is default set to have no password. Only if you previously provisioned an executive password will you need a password to enter the Cisco 675 or 678. Qwest recommends setting an executive password for security purposes.

STEP 8

Type "enable" at the cbos prompt. Then, press Enter.

cbos> enable



STEP 9

At the Password prompt, press Enter. The following prompt will appear:

NOTE: You are now in the provisioning mode and ready to program your Cisco DSL Modem.

 


Sub-Process 2 - Program the Cisco Modem for CPUnet Internet DSL Access:

NOTE!!!!   You will need to know whether your CPUnet Account is set for "PPP" or "STATIC IP" use.   If you are not sure, contact CPUnet Internet support at:  253-278-2204 or 253-221-3290 .  By default, all accounts are set for "PPP" use unless otherwise requested by you at the time your account was setup.

 



SETUP FOR "PPP" DHCP DEFAULT ACCOUNTS:     Note: for Optional "STATIC IP" Accounts CLICK HERE



 

You will need to know the following information supplied by CPUnet Internet at the time of your account setup:

  • 1 - Your account login.  Example: test@cpunet.net
  • 2 - Your account login.  Example: help

Note:  <enter>  means to press the Enter key on your keyboard.

At the "cbos#" prompt, type the following commands:  Only type the text shown below in GREEN TEXT.


set nvram erase  <enter>

write  <enter>

reboot  <enter>


Note:  The modem will now reboot and as above in Process 1 Step 6, press Enter to initiate the cbos prompt.  If the session does not initiate, press Enter again. A CBOS prompt will appear as follows:

At the "cbos#" prompt, now type the following commands.  Only type the text shown below in GREEN TEXT.  Do not type the NOTES or COMMENTS shown in RED!

reboot  <enter>


Note:  The modem will now reboot and as above in Process 1 Step 6, press Enter to initiate the cbos prompt.  If the session does not initiate, press Enter again. A CBOS prompt will appear as follows:

In the steps above you set a password for the router.  The password is open.
  Type  the password open and press Enter.  The following prompt will appear.

At the "cbos#" prompt, now type the following commands.  Only type the text shown below in GREEN TEXT.  Do not type the NOTES or COMMENTS shown in RED!

The modem will now reset the DSL connection according to the programming.  You may now exit the Hyperterminal program.  To disconnect your  Management Cable from the Modem FIRST UNPLUG THE POWER TO THE MODEM!!!  Then remove the cable and reconnect the power to the Modem.  Reboot your Computer and complete the PC SETUP Now.  CLICK HERE To Finish setting up your connection on your Computer if you have not done so already.

 

Skip the next "STATIC IP" Setup section if you have completed the "PPP/DHCP" Setup section above and continue on to PC SETUP now!



SETUP FOR "STATIC IP" ACCOUNTS:     Note: for Default PPP/DHCP Accounts CLICK HERE



 

You will need to know the following information supplied by CPUnet Internet at the time of your account setup:

  • 1 - Your account login.  Example: test@cpunet.net
  • 2 - Your account login.  Example: help
  • 3 - The STATIC IP ADDRESS number assigned to your modem.  Example:  208.8.145.25 
  • 4 - The Netmask ID number assigned to your modem.  Example:  208.8.145.26
  • 3 - The STATIC IP ADDRESSES  assigned to your individual Computers.   Example:  208.8.145.27  

Note:  <enter>  means to press the Enter key on your keyboard.

At the "cbos#" prompt, type the following commands:  Only type the text shown below in GREEN TEXT.

Note: Replace the text ipaddress in the line below with your cpunet internet router IP Address.

Note: Replace the text netmask  in the line below with your cpunet internet netmask number.

The modem will now reboot and reset the DSL connection according to the programming.  You may now exit the Hyperterminal program.  To disconnect your  Management Cable from the Modem FIRST UNPLUG THE POWER TO THE MODEM!!!  Then remove the cable and reconnect the power to the Modem.  Reboot your Computer and complete the PC SETUP  Now.  CLICK HERE To Finish setting up your connection on your Computer if you have not done so already.

 

 

 



SETUP YOUR CONNECTION ON YOUR COMPUTER:



The final step is to setup your Computer or Computers if you have a Static IP Account, to use the DSL Modem to access the Internet.  Follow the steps below:

Using your Mouse, CLICK on the "START" Button. move to "SETTINGS" and move to "CONTROL PANEL" and CLICK the LEFT Mouse button.  In the window that opens, locate the Icon named " Internet Options".  Click on this Icon to open the Internet Options settings box.

 

At the top of this box are "TABS" named General, Security, Content, Connections, Programs, advanced.  Click on the "TAB" named "General".  In the section named Homepage, the box named: Address, type in the following text:

http://www.cpunet.net

Now Click on the "TAB" named "Connections".  Click the button named " Setup".

 This new window is the Internet Connection Setup Wizard.  click the circle marked "I want to setup my connection manually or I want to connect through a local area network {LAN}" then click the "Next" button.

In this window click the circle marked:  "I connect through a local area network {LAN}" then click the "Next" button.

In this window click the check box marked:  " Automatic discovery of proxy server {recommended}  have a check mark in it.  If not, click on this box and then click the "Next" button.

In this window click on the circle marked:  "Yes"  to setup your email account then click the "Next" button.

In this window click on the circle marked:  "Create a new Internet mail account" then click the "Next" button.

In this window type Your Name in the box then click the "Next" button.

In this window type your CPUnet Internet email address then click the "Next" button.

In this window you will type the same text in both boxes marked " Incoming mail {piop3}"  and  " outgoing mail {SMPT} server.  Type the following into both boxes:

mail.cpunet.net

then click the "Next" button.

In this window type your CPUnet Email login name in the box marked " Account login".  Type Your CPUnet Internet Email Password in the box marked "password".  make sure there is a check mark in the box marked " Remember Password " then click the "Next" button.

Click the next button to finish your Computer connection setup.

this completes the setup for default PPP/DHCP Account DSL Access.  If you have a STATIC IP ADDRESS Account you will need to complete the following Here to setup your IP Address and Gateway in each computer. 

Otherwise, to access the internet, just click on the Internet Explorer " BIG E " Icon on your desktop.



 

INSTRUCTIONS TO SETUP STATIC IP SUPPORT ON YOUR COMPUTER:

Note:  You may need your Windows CD for this installation.

Using your Mouse, CLICK on the "START" Button. move to "SETTINGS" and move to "CONTROL PANEL" and CLICK the LEFT Mouse button.  In the window that opens, locate the Icon named " Network".  Click on this Icon to open the Network settings box.

In this window under the "TAB" marked " Configuration ", there is a large scrolling box marked " The following network components are installed ".  Scroll down towards the bottom of this box until you find the items beginning with " TCP/IP ".  The item you are looking to select will vary in each Computer depending on the network card installed.  It may end with the text " desktop Adapter ".  Click on this selection in the box and click the " Properties " button.
