Back to CPUnet Home

CPUnet uses server modems that are compatible
with the latest V.90, V.90/Flex and Flex technologies.

If you have a 56k V.90 modem and have trouble connecting above 26400k the most likely you do not have 56k service at your home or you are using a modem such as the Harmony or Askey 56k with a Rockwell chip set or a modem that only supports V.90X2.
These modems seem to have problems with V.90 FLEX connections and when flash upgraded, loose the ability to connect with Flex technology.  If you always connect at 33600k with your 56k modem then chances are that you have good line quality and you have a modem settings or compatibility issue.

We have tested many modems and have found the following
modems to be the most reliable.

Lucent 56k PCI and LT Win Modem

This modem is inexpensive and in most systems is a very fast and reliable V.90 Modem.  Many new computer systems come with a version of this modem.  We have tested the version in the new Compaq systems and it performs very well.  Although the Lucent LT Win modem is a "Win Modem", it uses new technology that does not slow performance as does the US Robotics and other "Win Modems".  The best chipset this series modem seems to be the unit manufactured by GVC Maxtech.  There are several of the LT Win modems on the market from many top name and generic manufactures and all of them perform well.  These modems have a distinct V.90 ping that can be heard when dialing into a V.90 capable server.  If you purchase one of these modems and have trouble making a connection to your ISP, but can connect between 42k and 46k.  Your modem was shipped with an older version of the V.90 drivers.  The drivers must be version 5.14 or above to obtain good connections to many V.90 services.  If your modem is a "LT Win" modem, follow the link below to obtain the latest version 5.32 drivers installation program.

US Robotics ISA V.90/X2 Modems  (Not the Win Modem!)

There are many, many chip sets used for these modems.  We have found that if your modem was manufactured as a V.90 modem and is not a "Win Modem", you should have reliable connections to V.90/X2 and V.90/Flex servers.  If you FLASH Upgrade your 56k modem to V.90, be sure of your exact chipset and make sure that you obtain the latest V.90 protocol firmware for your modem.  If  you use an older upgrade chances are that your modem will not connect above 33600k when connecting to non USR and other brands of modems.
Stay away from the USR "WIN Modems".

Supra 56i V.90/Flex PCI Modem

This modem has a lower connect rate than the Lucent modem and at times several re-dial attempts are required to establish a V.90 Connection with US Robotics V.90 Server modems.  Once connected, this modems performs well.
